Does BlueCross BlueShield Cover Drug & Alcohol Rehab?

BCBS plans cover drug and alcohol rehab. In fact, the majority of insurance plans cover all or a portion of your treatment expenses.

If you’re unsure whether your BCBS plan covers alcohol or drug rehab, call their customer service line and ask. They will answer any questions about the services they offer and how much they cost. You can also call the admissions team at California Wellness, and we would be happy to verify your coverage for you.

Many people don’t know that there is no standard definition of addiction. Therefore, each insurance company uses its own medical criteria to determine whether a person qualifies as an alcoholic or addict based on their past history of substance abuse problems. Because these terms are subjective rather than objective, some companies may require more evidence before approving benefits for addiction treatment than others do.

Coverage Options

If you have BCBS coverage, it’s important to know that the level of coverage and the length of time you’ll have to pay out-of-pocket before your insurance kicks in depend on your specific plan. Most BCBS plans cover drug rehab, but only if it is deemed medically necessary. In addition, some plans do not cover treatment at all, and many require that individuals meet their deductible before their benefits start. As a rule of thumb: if you’re considering going through drug rehab, it’s best to call your health insurance provider directly and ask how much they cover (or don’t cover) for addiction services. This will help ensure that you understand what type of plan you have so that there are no unexpected surprises down the line when it comes time for payment or claims submission after treatment completion.

Length of Coverage

The length of time a BCBS plan will cover drug rehab depends on the type of program you choose. For example, residential treatment typically lasts between 30 and 90 days. Outpatient programs to treat substance use disorder (SUD) are longer and may continue for several months or even years. In addition to the cost of the program itself, you should anticipate additional expenses related to travel and lodging if you need to go out of town for treatment. If your insurance doesn’t cover all your costs upfront, ask whether they can provide reimbursement as certain milestones are met—such as completing an assessment or attending counseling sessions—rather than paying in full at once while still undergoing treatment and not seeing results yet.

Levels of Care

BCBS covers all levels of substance abuse treatment. Depending on your insurance and your plan, you may be able to receive inpatient treatment at an inpatient rehab center or an outpatient center. You may also be eligible for medications like naltrexone (Vivitrol), a long-acting opioid antagonist that reduces cravings and the risk of relapse after detoxification and rehabilitation. In addition to medication therapy, family therapy can help you, and your loved ones understand how addiction has affected everyone’s life—and develop plans to ensure it doesn’t continue to affect everyone’s life. Individual therapy is also very important in helping people manage their emotions as they learn to live soberly again after abusing substances for so long. Most Blue Cross/Blue Shield insurance plans are required to cover all levels of treatment for alcohol and drug addiction. This means that your BCBS plan will cover inpatient, outpatient, and residential treatment. Inpatient programs provide 24-hour care in an inpatient facility where patients can stay for extended periods as they work on their recovery. Outpatient programs typically meet with a therapist or counselor during the week, but sometimes a patient may need to come into the office at night or on weekends as well. Some outpatient clinics also offer daycare services so you can attend classes while working full-time. Residential treatment facilities provide round-the-clock supervision, so patients don’t have to worry about finding somewhere safe to go when they leave the center.

In-Network vs. Out-of-Network That Accepts Anthem Insurance

In-network providers have agreed to provide services at a reduced cost. This is beneficial because it helps you save money on your treatment options.

PPO plans are less expensive than other types of health insurance plans. In-network providers generally offer higher quality care and more benefits than out-of-network facilities, so it’s worth paying the extra premium for an in-network facility or provider if your BCBS drug rehab is one that participates with your plan’s network.

In-network, or preferred provider organization (PPO) plans, generally offer you more benefits than out-of-network facilities. PPO plans also tend to be less expensive for patients than other types of health insurance plans because they provide discounts from providers who agree to provide services at a reduced cost.

In addition to offering more benefits and lower costs, in-network facilities may also have more convenient locations and shorter waiting times than out-of-network facilities. Continue Your Journey to Long-Term
